MODULAR PAINTINGS
These paintings have been done over a period of 4 years, from 2017-2021. They are 66” square. (168 cm). They are composed of 9 separated panels. Having worked with computers so much of my working life, I became intrigued by how everything we see on a computer is based on pixels….the world composed of little squares. Also, knowing that our perception is a really a complex series of multiple ‘stacking’ of observations, I thought I would try to explore this in an analog medium such as painting. A third element which I thought was interesting was how demanding our visual world has become. We notice, or ignore millions of images a day - a constant bombard of visual stimuli, which we take for granted. For my paintings, the eye sees the panels as separate but together, flitting from one to another, duplicating how our eyes see in real life.
These panels are mounted on a brace and ‘float’ within a frame, so that each panel is definably separate, but held together visually by the frame.
